Women over 50, or those who are peri-or post-menopausal at any age, typically experience numerous changes. Among them are weight gain, especially in the stomach area, hot flashes, night sweats, but one of the most disconcerting can be hair loss. This most often takes the form of overall diffuse thinning.

A variety of factors can play a role in causing hair thinning in menopausal women. These include, stress, underlying health conditions, the use of certain medications, and specific nutritional deficiencies.

Initially it may be seen as subtle changes. You may see more hair in the hairbrush or in the shower drain. Sometimes these changes are less subtle, but however they present they generally start us on the journey of teasing, brushing, shaping, spraying, and cutting our hair shorter and shorter in an effort to camouflage what we are seeing, or what we think we are seeing.

This can make you feel helpless or resigned to getting older. But that is not how it has to be!

Menopause Causes and Symptoms Can Affect Female Pattern Hair Loss

Stress

Stress can be a factor in women’s hair loss and when entering menopause, that stress can be amplified.

The stress of getting older, underlying health conditions, medications, changes in the metabolism, and even nutritional and vitamin deficiencies, can all exacerbate hair loss.

Here again, hair loss becomes a vicious cycle. We age and see our hair start to thin, we get concerned about the changes that are happening and that we are getting older, we stress, stress speeds up our hair loss, which causes us to stress about aging and hair loss, which exacerbates the hair loss.

By giving you the hair you thought wasn’t possible we hope to help alleviate that stress at least.

Hormones

Another factor in the changes to your hair amount, quality and texture are changes in your hormone levels. Estrogen and Progesterone levels may decrease. When this happens you may see more thinning at the back or sides, the ponytail becoming ‘thinner’, etc. You may also find changes in your hair texture. Waves or cowlicks you never had before, your hair may become drier or you might see more breakage.

Nutrition

As we age we may not eat the same way we once did. Poor nutrition can have an effect on your general health but can also impact your hair.

Without proper nutrition and/or vitamins and supplements, your hair can be affected in a negative way.

Biotin (B7), B6, B1, B12, iron deficiency, Vitamin D can all intensify hair loss or thinning. So it is very important as we get older, to be even more aware of the foods we are eating.

Changes in Your Metabolism

It is important that we have regular visits with our doctors. It is not uncommon for there to be changes in your metabolism, cholesterol levels, thyroid, etc can all change as we age and they can all affect your hair and nails as well.

The Next Step if it Worsens

You may be able to hold off menopausal thinning to some degree. Having proper nutrition, eating healthy, taking vitamin and mineral supplements as needed, staying hydrated, taking up yoga or other stress relief techniques, can all help.

But if your thinning continues to get worse and begins to take over your day, or you find yourself stressing about your hair loss, then we have a solution.

The Intralace Hair System - an Alternatives to Wigs

All of our Intralace Systems® are built on a light breathable mesh to which your existing hair is attached. Additional hair is then added to the mesh - which reduces strain compared to systems that attach directly to your hair. This not only allows your hair to continue to grow, but it is lighter than conventional wigs and is worn 24/7. It becomes part of you and allows you to take charge of your hair again.

You will still feel water on your scalp in the shower and the wind will go through your new hair without the fear that it will move it or shift its placement, because it is your own hair that is helping it to stay in place.

A full head of luxurious hair that you have only have dreamed of, is something every woman deserves.
